28 Nov A PILGRIMAGE TO THE SACRED PLACES ALONG LAKE OHRID
On 23rd November 2016, with the blessing of his grace, our Bishop Dositej, Fr Nenad Popovic, the parish priest of the parish of the Serbian Orthodox Church of the Holy Prince Lazar, Lazarica, took a group of parishioners to visit and pay homage to the holy and sacred places along the lake Ohrid in Macedonia.
On the first day, with our guides Letka and Djordje, we visited the beautiful church of St Sofija, the Church of the Holy Mother of God “Perivlepta”with some unusual icons, especially that of the Dormition of the Virgin, the church of St Kliment and Pantelejmon whith the ruins of what was the first school and missionary university of Slavonic script. Last of all, we climbed down the mountainside to the church of St John the Apostle, just above the lake Ohrid.
The next day we travelled South along the lake to the monastery of St Naum, a pupil of brother Saints Kiril and Metodije . It was here that the Holy Bishop Nikolaj Velimirovic wrote the Ohrid (Ochrid) Prologue in 20th C, translated into English by Lazarica Press.
On the third day we travelled towards the West to the Monastery of St John (the Baptist) Bigorski with its miraculous icon of St John and a section of the Holy Cross and amazingly beautiful iconostasis panels of high relief wood carvings. After this, we visited the Monastery of Rajcica with its relique of the Great Martyr St George.
Our last day involved a visit to the shrine of St Erazmus of Ohrid, regarded as a living saint, who baptised pagans in Ohrid Lake in the early days of Christianity and, last of all a visit to the Monastery of the Holy Mother of God in Kaliste, with its Miraculous Icon of the Virgin.
For most of us it was a wonderful, once in a lifetime, experience.
