Serbian Medieval Fresco Exhibition
September 15, 2018 - September 28, 2018£5
Tickets are ONLY available on the door.
We are extremely delighted to welcome to St Lazar’s Hall an exhibition of Serbian medieval fresco copies from the monasteries of Kosovo and Metohija. This unique occasion marks the first time such art has been displayed in the UK since the Yugoslav Medieval Fresco exhibition of 1953 at the Tate.
The original frescoes form part of the monastery walls and so cannot be transported. Therefore, the department of conservation and restoration at the Faculty of Arts in Belgrade has carefully recreated these beautiful images which can now be enjoyed around the world.
This collection of twenty frescoes depicts traditional Serbian and Byzantine Orthodox scenes from the Holy Gospels and images of saints. The frescoes originate from the 13th to 15th centuries. The collection was created using images from well known monasteries such as Gračanica, Sopoćani and Visoki Dečani.
The Church of the Holy Prince Lazar is situated next door to the hall and is richly decorated with similar imagery as displayed in the exhibition. The church was painted in the 1960s & 70s by the renowned Serbian artist Dušan Mihajlović in the style of medieval Serbian monasteries. The church has consistently been referred to as a ‘hidden gem’ in the city of Birmingham.
