This day commemorates the Holy Prince Lazar, patron saint of our church, who led his small army to the battlefield at Kosovo in 1389 to prevent the Ottoman Empire from conquering the rest of Christian Europe. Prince Lazar had been warned that he was facing a much more numerous and powerful army but his response was that the power of the enemy was incomparable to the power of the holy faith and the land he was to defend.
The battle was lost and Prince Lazar was martyred because he refused to give up his faith and submit to the Ottomans. But the Christian faith survived and the Battle of Kosovo is a crucial part of the history of Serbian Christians and is deeply embedded within Serbian faith and culture.
